Trail & Ember Series
Trail & Ember picks up where the Horizons Series leaves off, bringing you deeper into the backcountry and further into self-reliance. These overnight trips are designed to give you real-time practice in navigating terrain, setting up camp, deploying recovery tools, and mastering essential fieldcraft. Whether you're new to camping or ready to level up your overlanding skills, this trip delivers experience with a hands-on edge.

Expanded Logistics
Trail & Ember adds layers of real-world logistics to the experience packing for overnight comfort, managing camp setup, organizing gear, and adapting to changing conditions. It’s a shift into the next gear as you become more responsible for your space, your system, and your safety in the backcountry.

Hands-On Campcraft
Unlike the Horizons day trips, Trail & Ember takes you into an overnight setting where you’ll learn to build a functional camp from scratch setting up shelters, managing gear, and sleeping in the backcountry with confidence.

Deeper Recovery Work
Trail & Ember introduces live practice with recovery tools like traction boards and soft shackles, and includes more technical trail sections building on your Horizons foundation with real-world challenges and solutions.
What to expect
Trail & Ember is where overland learning starts to feel real. This overnight experience builds on the fundamentals introduced in our Horizons series and takes you deeper, literally and figuratively, into backcountry confidence.
Here's what you'll learn:
-
Trail Navigation
-
We’ll revisit how to read the land using both maps and apps, guiding you through OnX OffRoad and real-world terrain interpretation. You’ll start to understand how to adjust routes based on weather, terrain, and conditions as they evolve.

Campcraft & Firecraft
-
This is where comfort and capability meet. You’ll learn how to set up a safe and efficient campsite, build a fire with spark tools and prepared tinder, and manage fire responsibly from ignition to full extinguishment. We’ll also show you what cooking at camp can look like and what it means to leave a site better than you found it.
-
-
Safety & Situational Awareness
-
From wildlife awareness to backcountry lighting and field hygiene, we’ll cover what it takes to stay comfortable and secure overnight. You’ll also get hands-on experience with radio communication to help maintain group connection and safety.
-
-
Environmental Stewardship
-
You’ll see first-hand how we reduce our impact during longer stays through smart fire practices, respectful land use, and Tread Lightly and Leave No Trace principles that go beyond theory.
-
-
Mindset & Team Dynamics
-
Trail & Ember invites you to participate more actively in the group taking on roles like navigator, fire lead, and see what it's like to be a vehicle spotter. We emphasize calm leadership and adaptable thinking. Around the fire, there’s always space for questions, stories, and lessons worth carrying home.
